New TRCN Exam Syllabus 2026 [All Teachers] (NCE, Degree, Masters, PhD)

The new TRCN exam syllabus only has 5 topics: Numeracy, Literacy, ICT, Pedagogy and Safeguarding.

The TRCN CATEGORIES OF TEACHERS are (A) for PhD, (B) for Masters, (C) for Bachelor’s degree and (D) for NCE holders.

All these categories now share the same TRCN syllabus with sub-topics as follows.

1. Pedagogy

This will test your ability to plan, deliver and assess effective learning experiences that inclusive, equitable and responsive to the diverse needs of learners.

Expect about (29) QUESTIONS ON PEDAGOGY in your TRCN exam.

(1.1) Foundations of learning

  • Learning Theories
  • Developmental Stages of the learner
  • Factors affecting learning (motivation, attitude etc.)
  • Contextualisation of learning
  • Connecting learning to social needs (social reconstructionism)
  • Social Emotional Learning or Communication skills for teachers’ emotional development.
  • Overview of National Policy on Education in Nigeria (2014), National Teacher Policy and TRCN Act 31 of 1993 (CAP T3 of 2004)

(1.2) Instructional planning

  • Principles of curriculum design.
  • Bloom’s Taxonomy and writing SMART objectives.
  • Components of a scheme of work and a detailed lesson plan.
  • Criteria for evaluating and selecting instructional resources (e.g., relevance, cost, accessibility).

  • Gender Responsive Pedagogy.

(1.6) Assessment and evaluation

  • Purpose and characteristics of different assessment types.

2. Literacy

This will test your ability to develop strong reading, writing and communication skill in learners, which is critical for success across all subjects.

Expect about (12) QUESTIONS ON LITERACY in your TRCN exam.

(2.1) Reading comprehension

  • Understanding narrative and informational texts (memos, circulars, emails, manuals).
  • Reading simple literary texts for meaning.
  • Identifying main ideas, supporting details, inferences.
  • Interpreting charts, timetables, or short reports.
  • Understanding vocabulary in context (idioms, similes, figurative language).

(2.2) Grammar and structure

  • Parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, etc.)
  • Subject–verb agreement Tenses (simple, continuous, perfect; consistency).
  • Question forms and negatives.
  • Pronouns and determiners.
  • Prepositions.
  • Active vs passive (basic).
  • Modals of advice, permission, ability.
  • Sentence types (simple, compound, complex).
  • Common Nigerian English interference patterns.

(2.3) Vocabulary

  • Direct and indirect vocabulary instruction.
  • Morphology (prefixes, suffixes, roots).
  • Active listening techniques.

(2.4) Writing skills

  • Writing short notes, explanations or instructions.

  • Basic descriptive and narrative writing

  • Completing simple report formats (e.g., incident report, lesson

3. Numeracy

This will test your competency in fundamental math concepts and the pedagogical strategies for teaching numeracy effectively to build strong foundations in learners.

Expect about (12) QUESTIONS ON NUMERACY in your TRCN exam.

(3.1) Core math concept [Arithmetic]

  • Place value and number base systems.
  • Properties of operations (commutative, associative, distributive).
  • Algorithms for addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
  • Factors, multiples, Highest Common Factor (HCF), Lowest Common Multiple (LCM), Squares and Square roots.
  • Conversion between fractions, decimals and percentages.
  • Solving real-world problems involving rates and proportions.

(3.2) Geometry and measurement

  • Classification of 2D and 3D shapes.
  • Conversion within the metric system (length, mass, capacity and volumes).
  • Introduction to coordinates.

(3.3) Data handling and algebra

  • Types of data (qualitative, quantitative).
  • Construction and interpretation of bar charts, pie charts and line graphs.
  • Measures of central tendency (mean, median, mode).
  • Frequency distribution: histogram and cumulative frequency distribution.
  • Range, mean deviation and standard deviation.
  • Simple probability and Application angles.
  • Identifying and extending linear and non-linear patterns.
  • Solving for a single variable in linear, simultaneous and quadratic equations.

(3.4) Teaching strategies for numeracy

  • Concrete-Representational-Abstract (CRA) instructional sequence.
  • Strategies for teaching word problems (e.g., Singapore Math model drawing).
  • Fostering a growth mindset in Mathematics.
  • Lessons remediation.

4. Information Communication Technology (ICT)

This will test your proficiency in using ICT tools and integrating digital resources responsibly and effectively into the teaching and learning process.

Expect about (4) QUESTIONS ON ICT in your TRCN exam.

(4.1) Core digital competencies

  • Basic Operating system (Windows/Mac).
  • Cloud storage, file management, productivity tools.
  • Basic use of search engines (Google, Google Search).
  • Using email, video conferencing (Zoom, Google Meet, Teams).
  • Collaborative document tools.

(4.2) Leveraging mobile technology

  • Selecting effective educational apps.
  • Structuring blended learning models (e.g., flipped classroom).

5. Safeguarding

This will test your knowledge of national policies and practical application of child protection measures.

Expect about (3) QUESTIONS ON SAFEGUARDING in your TRCN exam.

(5.1) Foundational principles and policies

  • The difference between child protection and safeguarding.
  • Principles of safeguarding.
  • The legal and ethical basis for safeguarding in Nigeria.
  • Key components of the National Policies and legal frameworks (e.g., roles and responsibilities, risk assessment).
  • Implementing physical and psychological safety standards.

(5.2) Recognizing signs of abuse and reporting mechanisms

  • Physical, sexual, Psychological and emotional, neglect and negligence indicators of different types of abuse.

  • Confidentiality, do no harm and getting informed consent.
  • Step-by-step process for making a referral.
  • Documentation requirements for safeguarding incidents.
