Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) is the federal body that regulates and licenses Nigerian teachers.
If you hold an NCE, or a degree (either in education or with PGDE), TRCN is what makes you legally qualified to teach in Nigerian public or private school.
TRCN also support Nigerian teachers abroad with Letter of Professional Standing (LoPS), which is a required document for UK QTS, Canada OCT, and many other international teaching pathways.
TRCN overview
- TRCN registration is compulsory for anyone who wants to legally practice as a teacher in Nigeria.
- Every first-time registrant must take the Professional Qualifying Exam (PQE).
- Registration runs on a “diet” (batch) system, with exams held twice a year.
- Total cost varies by category and location, including registration, exam, and certificate fees.
- Successful applicants get TRCN certificate and license, renewable through the Council’s MCPD program
- TRCN Letter of Professional Standing is a separate but related document built on your registration history.
What TRCN registration involves
TRCN is only for those with a background in education.
Teachers with NCE, B.Ed, or degree in other fields (HND, B.A., B.Sc.,) plus PGDE qualify to REGISTER FOR TRCN.
Those without any education qualification are ineligible.
Registration starts with an application for the professional exam, which is a CBT covering basic education topics according to the TRCN EXAM SYLLABUS.
TRCN exam run on diet (batch) system.
- May diet (Batch “A”)
- November diet (Batch “B”)
This means applications, exams and certificate processing are in fixed batches rather than continuous all year round.
Knowing these helps you plan your application, TRCN FEES, exam preparation and when to expect your certificate.
Why TRCN for teachers in Nigeria and even abroad?
Inside Nigeria, TRCN registration is not optional.
Many schools now require a valid TRCN LICENSE before employment.
And teachers without one risk being unable to renew appointments or advance in rank, both in the private and public education sector.
It is also required for school business name registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) and exam accreditation.
Similarly, TRCN registration opens access to MCPD points, which it uses to track your professional development for license renewal.
For Nigerian teachers abroad, TRCN Letter of Professional Standing (LoPS) is a core document for UK QTS and Canada OCT certification process.
This means your TRCN history contributes to the ease of your international licensure.
How long does TRCN registration take?
It depends on when you applied for the exam, took it and passed.
Exams are held in May and November.
Results come out 1–2 week(s), after which, TRCN CERTIFICATE and license collection are almost instant once you pay online via the TRCN portal.
Though, this process may take longer for those abroad.
Any need for TRCN to teach abroad?
Not exactly.
But TRCN Letter of Professional Standing is required for UK QTS Assessment-Only route and Canada OCT certification.
These TRCN routes are way easier than applying for those international teaching licenses from scratch.
