What is TRCN iPQE?
The iPQE (international Professional Qualifying Exam) is the TRCN exam for Nigerian teachers living abroad.
You write the exam online from your home abroad without needing to visit a physical TRCN EXAM CENTRE.
iPQE applies to you if you:
- are a Nigerian citizen in diaspora.
- hold an NCE, degree, masters or PhD in education.
- hold a non-education degree alongside a PGDE, PDE, or PDDE.
- want to obtain TRCN certificate without returning to Nigeria.
The iPQE is not open to non-Nigerians, regardless of their teaching qualification.
Required documents for TRCN registration abroad
Gather and scan every document on this list before you start your registration.
You are to submit them digitally, and any missing or unclear document will delay your process.
| Document | Notes |
| Teaching certificate (NCE, degree, masters, or PhD in education) | Must be clear and complete. If issued outside Nigeria, a regularised copy is required. |
| Teaching qualification (if degree is not in education) | PGDE, PDE, or PDDE certificate + your degree |
| Proof of Nigerian citizenship | International passport, National ID card, or Voter’s Card |
| Proof of residence abroad | Work permit, utility bill, residence permit, or admission letter from a foreign institution |
| Passport photograph | Clear, scanned or photographed |
| WAEC, NECO, or equivalent O’Level certificate | As proof of secondary school qualification |
For foreign certificates
If your teaching certificate was awarded by an institution outside Nigeria, you must first get it regularised by the Federal Ministry of Education in Nigeria.
This regularisation is a formal verification that your foreign qualification is equivalent to Nigerian standards.
Contact Federal Ministry of Education for the process as TRCN will not accept an unregularized foreign certificate.
TRCN iPQE fees
Diaspora exam fees are higher than those paid by teachers in Nigeria.
And these fees are for the exam (iPQE) only.
They do not cover your TRCN CERTIFICATE, licence or induction, which attract a separate fee.
| Qualification level | iPQE fees |
| NCE (Category D) | ₦60,000 |
| Degree / PGDE (Category C) | ₦80,000 |
| Master’s (Category B) | ₦90,000 |
| PhD (Category A) | ₦100,000 |
How to register for TRCN abroad
1. Confirm eligibility and gather documents
Before anything else, confirm that your qualification category is one that TRCN accepts.
And that you have all your documents scanned and saved as clear image files or PDFs.
Do this before touching Remita on TRCN portal, because once you pay, there is no refund.
2. Create your profile on TRCN portal
Visit the TRCN Teacher Portal at teachers.trcn.gov.ng and create an account.
- Click “Register” and fill in your personal details.
- full name (as is on your certificate)date of birthNINphone number
- email address
- Upload your teaching certificate or qualification.
- Wait for TRCN to verify your uploaded certificates (takes about 1-2 weeks).
You’ll get a notification once TRCN approves your profile.
Keep your email and phone number active as TRCN communicates via both channels for diaspora candidates and will add you to a WhatsApp group for exam updates.
If the contact details are wrong or inactive, you may miss your exam date notification.
3. Pay via Remita
You pay via Remita but still on the TRCN portal.
Select any of the Remita payment options and pay exactly the total amount because any addition or subtraction will cause the transaction to fail.
After successful payment, keep your payment receipt PDF and await further instructions on your profile or via email about your online exam date, and login details.
4. Write the iPQE Online
Once scheduled, you’ll write the iPQE online from your location.
The exam is a Computer Based Test (CBT) with 60 objective questions to be completed within one hour.
It covers pedagogy, literacy, numeracy, ICT, and safeguarding with pedagogy having the largest weight (about 48% of the total marks).
Make sure you have a stable internet connection, a functioning device (laptop or desktop), and a quiet environment on your exam date.
TRCN release results within 1-2 week(s) of the exam.
After passing the exam, pay the post-exam fees via Remita through your profile on the portal and your digital certificate and TRCN LICENSE will be available for download almost immediately.
No more need for physical collection or transfer of certificate as you can now print the digital copy on a concord paper for use anywhere.
Key differences between iPQE and PQE
| PQE | iPQE |
| CBT at a physical centre in Nigeria | CBT online from your location abroad |
| ₦5,000 – ₦8,000 exam fee | ₦60,000 – ₦100,000 exam fee |
| Exams in May and November | Exam dates differ |
Conclusion
The iPQE covers the same content as the PQE in Nigeria, so it is just as important to prepare well.
Pedagogy alone counts for half the total marks, but many underrate its depth of questions.
