This guide is only for “Nigerian teachers abroad.” If you’re in Nigeria, SEE HOW TO PASS TRCN (PQE) instead.
What’s the TRCN diaspora exam?
TRCN Professional Qualifying Exam (PQE) for Nigerian teachers in diaspora is called iPQE (international PQE).
It’s a computer-based test (CBT) taken online, from anywhere in the world without travelling to Nigeria.
The pass mark is 50% and the questions are 60. So, scoring less than 30 is failure.
Failure means you’ll pay the huge DIASPORA EXAM FEES again to rewrite at another time plus other inconveniences.
TRCN iPQE syllabus
The exam covers the following topics in the given proportions:
- Pedagogy (48%)
- Literacy (20%)
- Numeracy (20%)
- ICT (7%)
- Safeguarding (5%)
And no matter your TRCN CATEGORY (A – PhD, B – master’s, C – degree/PGDE and D – NCE), the exam topics and percent of questions remain the same.
4-week study plan to pass TRCN from abroad
Week 1 — Orient yourself
- Download your category’s syllabus.
- Get your past questions pack.
- Overview the (5) topics once. Don’t study yet, just identify what feels familiar and what feels foreign.
- Mark the unfamiliar topics to get extra time in Week 2.
Week 2 — Heavy study
Focus 70% of your study time on the three major topics: Pedagogy, Literacy, and Numeracy.
And study each topic with three questions in mind:
- What’s the definition?
- What are the key theorists or frameworks?
- How does this apply in a classroom?
We’ve written e-Notes on each topic and sub-topics for your study.
Week 3 — Past questions
- Work through past questions topic-by-topic.
- Past questions do repeat, but in different words and from different areas of the same topic. Don’t cram answers; understand the logic behind each correct option instead.
- For every question you get wrong, read the explanation or go back to the topic e-Note.
Week 4 — CBT practice
- Switch to timed practice sessions to simulate the real exam experience.
- Do at least 3 full mock exams of 60 questions within a set time limit.
- Don’t introduce new material. Revise only what you already know.
- Rest two days before the exam.
How to set up your exam environment
This is where most diaspora candidates forget or take lightly and get penalized for.
The iPQE is an online, invigilated exam.
So, your environment is your exam hall. Treat it as such to pass TRCN exam from abroad.
Your device
- Use a laptop or desktop computer, not a phone or tablet.
- Charge it fully and keep it plugged in throughout the exam.
- Close all other apps (browser tabs, Slack, email, everything) before the exam begins.
- Test your webcam and microphone at least one day before.
- Ensure your operating system (OS) and browser are up to date.
Internet connection
- Use a wired ethernet connection if possible. WiFi can drop at crucial moment.
- If you must use WiFi, sit very close to the router.
- Run a speed test beforehand: you need a stable connection of at least 5 Mbps.
- Have a mobile data backup plan ready (phone hotspot) in case your main connection fails.
- Don’t rely on public WiFi.
Your room
- Write the exam alone in a quiet, locked room with nobody else present.
- The invigilator can see and hear you on camera. Don’t have anyone come in.
- Remove anything from the room that could be flagged, such as textbooks, notes, second screens.
- Ensure the lighting is good because your face must be clearly visible.
- Inform anyone in your home that you must not be disturbed throughout that 1-hour exam period.
Your time zone
TRCN will send your exam date and time to your registered email and phone number.
And the time is in Nigerian time (WAT, UTC+1).
Convert it to your local time zone.
If your exam is scheduled for 10:00 AM WAT and you’re in the UK, that’s 9:00 AM your time. In Canada (EST), that’s 4:00 AM.
Set two alarms (a day and an hour before exam).
On exam day
- Restart your computer and open only the exam browser.
- Log into the TRCN portal 15–20 mins before start time.
- Have your exam permit/ID visible and ready to show the invigilator.
- If you must keep your phone within reach, face it down and don’t touch it during the exam.
- Have water on your desk. Nothing else.
During the exam
- Read ‘confusing’ questions TWICE before selecting an answer.
- Don’t spend above 60 secs on any question. Skip difficult questions and move to the next then return later.
- Answer ALL questions, even if unsure. There’s no negative marking.
- Don’t talk, look away from the screen repeatedly, or leave the frame because you can be suspected and penalized for malpractices.
5 mistakes that cause failure
Avoid these mistakes to pass TRCN diaspora exam.
1. Studying the wrong way
Memorizing past question answers word-for-word will not favour you.
The exam questions are rephrased with different or scattered options.
Study to understand the rationale behind each answer instead of just cramming answers.
2. Disregarding the other topics
Many diaspora candidates focus on Pedagogy’s percentage of questions and Numeracy’s calculations.
Forgetting that Literacy of 20% (i.e. 12 questions) and even Safeguarding of 5% should be studied too.
Beware of overconfidence and leave nothing to chance.
3. Poor internet on exam day
Test your connection with a video call a day before the exam.
If it drops during a video call, it will drop during your exam.
Sort it out before the day.
4. Wrong time zone
Many miss their exam window due to time zone differences.
Confirm your WAT time, convert it correctly and set your alarm for at least 45 minutes before.
5. Starting preparation too late
The earlier you REGISTER FOR TRCN and start studying, the more time you have to revise forgotten or unfamiliar topics.
This boosts your confidence, reducing exam tension and improving your success rate.
Four weeks preparation is the minimum. Six is better.
Now, if you don’t mind…
Notice how detailed this guide is? We really wanted to sell it (in dollars) at first but later placed your success first.
Nevertheless, we won’t mind a ‘tip’ to get us coffee (especially if this was helpful to you).
GOOD LUCK.
