Many teachers are asking if it is possible to obtain TRCN without Degree in Education.

Well, there’s good news!

See how TRCN for non-education graduates works, what ‘non-education’ degrees mean and steps to become eligible for TRCN with HND or non-education degree(s).

Who is eligible for TRCN?

The TRCN is for education graduates who want to become licensed in the teaching profession.

Pass the exam and you become registered as a professional teacher with the TRCN CERTIFICATE and license.

Those eligible to register for TRCN are:

  • Teachers with NCE.
  • Graduates with degree in Education
    like B.Ed, B.Sc (Ed), or B.A (Ed).

If you have an NCE or degree in education, you’re eligible and can start your TRCN EXAM REGISTRATION now.

Note that if you have NCE and your degree is not in education, you still qualify for TRCN.

But an additional teaching qualification is required from those without NCE or with non-education degrees.

What are non-education degrees?

A non-education degree means any degree not focused on teaching or educational studies.

Examples of non-education degrees:

  • Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.)
  • Bachelor of Arts (B.A)
  • Bachelor of Engineering (B.Eng.)
  • Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS)
  • Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc)
  • Bachelor of Law (LL.B)
  • Higher National Diploma (HND)

Do you have these non-education degrees and have been teaching or developed interest in teaching but want to do it professionally?

You can only get TRCN without degree in education when you obtain any of these additional teaching qualifications below.

Get TRCN without Education degree

How can teachers with non-education degrees get TRCN?

So, if you didn’t study Education, you must complete a professional teaching program to be eligible for TRCN exam.

The accepted programs are PGDE and PDE.

Both teaches basic principles of teaching, classroom management, lesson planning and student assessment.

Once you complete any of these programs, you can then APPLY FOR TRCN EXAM.

Let’s explain each of them better.

PGDE explained

PGDE stands for Postgraduate Diploma in Education.

This is best for university graduates who studied courses outside education.

The PGDE program covers areas like:

  • Principles of teaching and learning
  • Educational psychology
  • Teaching methods
  • Curriculum development
  • Classroom management
  • Student evaluation

The program takes about 9–12 months.

And after completion, you become eligible to register for the TRCN exam.

Only Nigerian universities offer PGDE programs.

PDE explained

PDE stands for Professional Diploma in Education.

This is designed for HNDs and teachers who already work in schools but do not have formal teaching qualifications.

The course teaches topics such as:

  • Teaching skills
  • Classroom control
  • Lesson planning
  • Child development
  • Teaching ethics

The program lasts about one year.

And after completing the PDE, you qualify to apply for TRCN exam.

Difference between PGDE and PDE

Though PGDE and PDE are both teaching qualification programs, they’re for different groups of teachers.

Here are the key differences.

1. Target students

  • PGDE is more for university graduates with B.Sc. or B.A degrees.
  • PDE is for HND holders or practicing teachers.

2. Awarding institutions

  • PGDE is offered by universities.
  • PDE is organized by teacher training institutions and education bodies.

3. Academic level

  • PGDE is a postgraduate qualification.
  • PDE is a professional teaching diploma.

4. Purpose

  • PGDE prepares graduates to become professional teachers.
  • PDE helps practicing teachers gain formal teaching training.

Despite these differences, PGDE or PDE can help you obtain TRCN without Degree in Education.

My advice for you

Completing a teaching qualification program is a must for obtaining TRCN without degree in education.

If you’re still quite a fresh university degree holder, PGDE program is your best option.

But if you have HND or already teaching for awhile without formal training, PDE program is more suitable.

The third option is NCE.

After completing either program, you can REGISTER FOR TRCN exam and obtain the certificate and license once you pass.

GOOD LUCK.
