Breakdown of nursing school admission in Nigeria

Nigerian Nursing school admission is not a single process.

You’re expected to have cleared several stages before even submitting an application.

Here’s how the entire process works.

There are two ways into nursing school in Nigeria:

  • University route.
  • College of Nursing Sciences route.

Both demand strong science credentials at O’Level. Both require JAMB. And both involve screening beyond your paper qualifications.

But the University route leads to Bachelor of Nursing Science (B.NSc) which takes 5 years and is processed through the JAMB UTME portal plus Post-UTME.

While the College of Nursing Sciences route leads to ND/HND which takes 4 years, and requires both JAMB and an entrance exam.

RouteDuration & CertificateEntry
University5 Years

College of Nursing Sciences4 Years

Post-Basic Nursing12 – 18 Months

Post-Basic skips the regular nursing school admission requirements because it requires you to already be a Registered Nurse (RN) before applying.

O’Level requirements for Nursing School in Nigeria

You need a minimum of 5 credits (C6 or above) in your O’Level result at not more than two sittings.

And it must be in these subjects:

  • English Language
  • Mathematics
  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • Physics

A D7 in any of them can disqualify you from the screening process, regardless of the other grades.

Result combination policies

O’Level WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB are all accepted.

But you can’t mix results from different exam bodies for your two sittings.

So, NABTEB can only be combined with another NABTEB result from a separate sitting.

You can’t pair a NABTEB result with a WAEC or NECO result. Institutions will reject that combination.

Most schools allow a maximum of two sittings.

But some competitive federal institutions only accept one sitting.

Confirm that school’s sitting policy before you apply.

What this means for you

If you’re planning to combine result, ensure both are from the same exam body. Otherwise, your profile may be invalidated even if you have the required credits.

This is one of the most common reasons students lose their nursing school admission applications even before screening stage.

University vs. College of Nursing requirements

Both university and college require O’Level and JAMB.

Where they differ is after JAMB.

For University, you must first SCORE HIGH IN JAMB enough to meet the departmental CUT-OFF MARK FOR NURSING, then take their Post-UTME.

Some universities also conduct oral interviews or medical screenings before finalising admission.

For College of Nursing Sciences, you take JAMB, and then sit the college’s entrance exam.

Core JAMB subject combination

The JAMB subject combination for nursing is fixed. It doesn’t change from year to year or school to school.

You must register for:

  1. Use of English
  2. Biology
  3. Chemistry
  4. Physics

That is it. No other subject is accepted.

If you registered JAMB with a different combination, your application for nursing school admission won’t be processed.

JAMB cut-off marks for nursing

The general JAMB cut-off is usually around 140 to 160.

But the departmental cut-off mark for nursing in most institutions starts from 200 and above.

Understanding what the requirements for nursing school in Nigeria are at this level takes you from being a hopeful applicant to being a prepared one.

Screening requirements for Nursing admission

Your O’Level and JAMB scores are academic.

What are the other admission requirements for nursing beyond those academic grades?

Every university or college runs its own screening and this is where non-academic requirements are checked.

Age requirement

The minimum age for nursing school admission in Nigeria is 16 years old at the time of application.

Some institutions may specify that you must be 17 by October of that admission year.

Your birth certificate or sworn declaration of age will be required for this verification.

Medical fitness

Most federal and state institutions require a medical fitness certificate from a government-recognised hospital.

This certificate confirms that you’re physically and mentally fit for clinical training.

You’ll also undergo basic physical screening during clearance, for conditions that could interfere with direct patient care.

Local Government attestation

An attestation letter from your local government of origin is a standard requirement for public NURSING SCHOOLS IN NIGERIA.

This is not optional.

Missing it during clearance can cancel your admission.

Steps to admission into Nigerian nursing school

Now that you’ve known the nursing school admission requirements in Nigeria, see how to put it all together into a plan that works.

1. Confirm your O’Level result

First check that your five credits are in the required subjects and that your result combination is from a single exam body before anything else.

2. Register the correct JAMB subjects

Select Use of English, Biology, Chemistry, and Physics when REGISTERING FOR JAMB UTME.

Recheck the subject list on your JAMB profile before your exam date.

Because any error here may not be corrected fast enough.

3. Target for your JAMB score

Aim for 200+ if you’re applying to a federal university nursing program. For state universities and colleges, the benchmark is often 160 – 180.

Know your institution’s history before you sit.

4. Prepare for the screening

Whether Post-UTME or entrance exam, prepare for it.

Because they’re not the same as JAMB.

Many schools weigh Biology and Chemistry more at this stage.

5. Gather your clearance documents

Don’t wait for your admission letter before you start collecting your LGA attestation, medical fitness certificate, and other non-academic documents.

The process for some of these takes weeks.

6. Monitor your school’s portal

Admission timelines shift.

Cut-off marks are adjusted.

Screening dates change.

The only way to stay ahead is to check the official portal of each institution you applied to on a regular basis, not to rely on WhatsApp groups for updates.

Conclusion

The nursing school admission requirements in Nigeria are are specific, strict, and applied across institutions.

  • Your five O’Level credits
  • Your correct JAMB subject combination
  • Your screening score
  • Your age
  • Your documents

Missing any one of them will shut you out, no matter how strong the rest are.

GOOD LUCK.
