WAEC Conjunction questions

Attempt each question before checking its correct answer and explanation.

Choose the word(s) that best completes each of the following sentences.

WAEC English 2012 (42)

1. Kojo succeeded in passing his examination _____ the odds he faced.

A. regardless
B. despite
C. moreover
D. however

The sentence implies that Kojo succeeded even though (despite the fact that) he faced challenges. Option (A) would have also been correct as (…regardless of).

“hardly…when” is used to imply that an action happened almost immediately after another.

“No sooner…than” shows comparison, but “No sooner…when” indicates timing.

Option (B) is used to indicate that something still happened even when other things tried to prevent it.

WAEC English 2011 (70)

9. _____ Ali did not win the election, he has continued to award scholarships to the less privileged.

A. Nevertheless

D. Despite

Option (C) is used to show contrast, and in this case, Ali did not win the election but he still continued to award scholarships. Option (D) would need a gerund, (despite not winning the election…)
