TRCN payment guide and hidden costs
Yes. All TRCN fees are listed in this post.
But the amount goes beyond just the official prices, especially now that the means of payment is fully “digital“.
1. Cost beyond base fee
When calculating your budget, the “official fee” is just the beginning.
Make provision for “transaction fees” too.
- Remita processing fee: a service charge (usually ₦161.25).
- Bank charges: for payment via “bank transfer” or any other indirect option (about ₦50 – ₦100).
- Other charges: if using a third-party like Cyber Café or someone’s ATM that requires their own service fee (usually ₦500 – ₦1,000).
2. Avoid bank transfer issues
To ensure your payment goes through when using bank transfer, USSD or other options outside ATM card, enter the same amount displayed by Remita.
For example:
If Remita shows your total fee as ₦6,721.53, enter that exact amount in your bank app or USSD process.
Because adding or removing even 1Kobo will cause that transaction to fail.
Also double-check your card details or the account number and name before clicking “Submit.”
3. Payment verification
After paying your fees, don’t leave it at that.
Save the PDF receipt generated by Remita as a proof of your successful payment.
You really want to have it when its needed.
4. Update for those abroad
If you’re a Nigerian teacher in diaspora (UK, USA, Canada, etc.), your exam fee is higher.
This is to cover for the international proctoring services and online supervision.
Also ensure to select “iPQE” during your TRCN EXAM REGISTRATION to avoid being given a physical centre back in Nigeria for your exam.
5. Strict refund policy
TRCN operates under the TSA (Treasury Single Account) guidelines.
This means that refunds for “duplicate or overpayment” are extremely difficult to process.
So, if you pay for Category ‘A’ (PhD) instead of ‘C’ (Degree) by mistake, it is easier to just leave that credit for your future annual license renewals than seeking a cash refund.

TRCN exam fees
TRCN exam fee for PhD holders in Nigeria is ₦8,000 while Nigerian teachers abroad with PhD pay ₦100,000.
The TRCN exam fee for Master degree holders in Nigeria is ₦7,000 while those abroad with Masters pay ₦90,000.
TRCN exam fee for Bachelor degree holders in Nigeria is ₦6,000 while same degree holders abroad pay ₦80,000.
The exam fee for NCE holders in Nigeria is ₦5,000 while those with NCE abroad pay ₦60,000.
TRCN certificate fees
Only those who PASS THE TRCN EXAM can make payment for their certificate within 365 days after the result release.
Any longer than that, and you’d have to take the exam again.
Here are the TRCN certificate fees for each CATEGORY OF TEACHERS.
- Category A – PhD: ₦17,000
- Category B – Masters: ₦13,000
- Category C – Degree: ₦10,000
- Category D – NCE: ₦5,000
TRCN fees for licence
Only those who have TRCN certificate can make payment for their license.
The TRCN LICENSE is renewed yearly, but you pay for the first (3) years at your first collection.
| PER YEAR | FIRST (3) |
|---|---|
| ₦10,000 | ₦30,000 |
| ₦8,000 | ₦24,000 |
| ₦6,000 | ₦18,000 |
| ₦4,000 | ₦12,000 |
While the certificate is just a proof of your ‘membership’ with TRCN, the license is your legal ‘permit’ to teach.
Fees for TRCN induction
TRCN induction is an official ceremony for newly “certified” teachers.
It is a public confirmation by TRCN that you’re now recognised in Nigeria as a certified teacher licensed to practice the profession.
Whether PhD, Masters, Degree or NCE holders, TRCN induction fees are the same for all categories of teachers.
But are different for these (3) levels of Nigerian teachers:
- ‘Graduating Students‘ (final-year education students).
- ‘In-Service Teachers‘ (those already teaching in Nigerian schools).
- ‘Teachers in Diaspora‘ (Nigerian teachers abroad).
| GRADUATING STUDENTS ₦5,000 |
| IN-SERVICE TEACHERS ₦10,000 |
| TEACHERS ABROAD ₦20,000 |
Frequently asked questions
Yes. The “Registration Fee” covers for your TRCN certificate as proof of entry into the council’s database, while the “Exam Fee” covers your CBT session cost.
But you’re required to pay for the first three years at once before renewing every year at ₦4,000 for NCE, ₦6,000 for Degree, ₦8,000 for Masters, and ₦10,000 for PhD holders.
If you underpay, generate a new RRR for the balance and keep both receipts. If you overpay, getting a refund is difficult. Usually, the excess can be for your future annual dues.
