How Current Are These Past Questions?
Each exam past questions here are reviewed and updated to reflect the current exam session.
But “current” depends on the exam and here’s why.
TRCN exam is held in twice a year (May and November), with the syllabus periodically reviewed by the council.
When TRCN updates its categories, topics or format, its past questions are checked to confirm they still reflect what will really be tested.
TRCN questions before 2025 will still have questions from the old 29 topics, even when it is now just 5 topics in the new syllabus.
NMCN exam follows a similar pattern.
Nursing and midwifery education in Nigeria is updated to reflect current clinical standards, which means older past questions can include content that no longer matches current best practice.
WAEC and JAMB both set new questions every year.
But while their syllabuses are more stable, their grading system, subject combinations and admission requirements can shift.
Past questions are for understanding your exam format and repeated topics, not a guarantee that the exact same questions will appear again, word-for-word.
So, whenever you download a set, check that exam syllabus to confirm nothing has changed since the last time.
After practicing with past questions, wha nex?
Working through a set of past questions is only the first half of using them well. What you do afterward is usually what determines whether that practice actually improves your result.
Start by reviewing every question you got wrong, not just to see the correct answer, but to understand why your original answer was wrong. There is a meaningful difference between a careless mistake, a gap in your knowledge of the topic, and a misunderstanding of how the question was phrased. Each of these needs a different fix. A careless mistake might mean you need to slow down during practice. A knowledge gap means you need to go back to that specific topic in the syllabus. A misreading of the question might mean you need more practice with the exam’s particular question style, which varies between TRCN, NMCN, WAEC and JAMB.
Once you have identified your weak areas, group them by topic rather than treating each wrong answer as an isolated event. If you are preparing for NMCN and notice you consistently miss questions in a particular subject area out of the 29 covered, that subject deserves focused revision time before you move on to the next full past questions set. The same applies to TRCN’s five core areas, or to specific WAEC or JAMB subjects where your scores are consistently lower than others.
From there, go back to the syllabus page for your exam board and check that your revision is actually covering what the exam tests, rather than what you assume it tests. It is common for candidates to over-prepare for topics they already know well, simply because those topics feel comfortable, while under-preparing for weaker areas that feel less enjoyable to study.
Finally, build in timed practice as you get closer to your exam date. Working through past questions without a time limit teaches you the content, but working through them under exam conditions teaches you pacing, which is often where candidates lose marks even when they know the material. This is particularly important for JAMB and TRCN, both of which are computer-based and strictly timed.
Treat past questions as a diagnostic tool first and a content source second. The real value is in what they reveal about where your preparation still needs work, not simply in how many questions you managed to get through.
