25 Smart Tips to Pass JAMB Without Studying Hard or Cheating (2027 Ultimate Guide)

By EXAM MAJOR 2 Comments
Last Updated on 20th October, 2026.

Many candidates believe that to pass JAMB 2027, you either have to read all day and night or take illegal shortcut.

But that’s not true! Those who score high in UTME didn’t read the longest hours. Instead, they studied the right way.

See the complete guide to help you pass JAMB without studying too hard or cheating. Every tip here is practical, reasonable and based on how JAMB works.

Is JAMB Difficult to Pass?

JAMB is not as broad as WAEC or NECO.

It tests you on specific topics from the OFFICIAL JAMB SYLLABUS using objective questions only.

  • There are no essays.
  • No written workings.
  • No subjective marking.

Everything is multiple choice.

The challenge isn’t the depth of the questions but the time pressure and tricky options of the CBT format that fails many who never prepared.

Candidates who study the right topics, practise with past questions and manage their time well outperform those who read without direction.

That’s what this guide will help you do.

Preparations for JAMB

Everything you do before exam day determines how you perform on exam day.

These are the smart preparation steps we recommend for every candidate who wants to pass JAMB without studying too hard or cheating.

1. Choose your course wisely

The course you choose in JAMB is the first major decision that will determine how hard your preparation goes.

Here is why.

Your course determines your subject combination.

And the aggregate of your scores in those four subjects determines your JAMB result.

So, if you choose a course that does not include at least one subject you’re good at, you already set yourself up for a harder preparation than necessary.

Take an example.

If your favourite subject is Agricultural Science but you struggle with calculations, choosing Mechanical Engineering gives you the combination of:

  • English
  • Physics
  • Chemistry
  • Mathematics

None of which plays to your strength.

Now imagine you chose Horticulture instead.

That combination includes English, Mathematics, Agricultural Science and either Biology or Chemistry.

Your best subject is there and the others are also very close to what you already know.

Choose a course that aligns with your academic strengths to make your preparation easier and increase your chances of scoring high.

  • SEE THE REQUIRED JAMB SUBJECT COMBINATION FOR THAT YOUR COURSE

2. Target a higher JAMB score

Once you’ve chosen your course, next is to target a score.

But don’t target the minimum or JAMB CUT-OFF MARK.

Here’s why…

Most federal universities mercilessly divide your JAMB score when calculating admission merit scores.

UNILAG for instance divides JAMB scores by 8.

That means a score of 200 becomes just 25 points in their internal calculation.

You’d then have to make up the rest through Post UTME.

The lower your JAMB score, the more pressure it puts on your Post UTME performance.

Target a JAMB score far higher than cut-off mark, so that even if you fall short, you’ll still land well above the minimum.

  • SEE JAMB CUT-OFF MARKS FOR ALL COURSES

3. Split your target score

A target score of 300 or 320 can feel intimidating at first glance but here’s a simple trick to make it manageable.

Divide your target score by 4 to see what you need per subject.

A target of 312 means you need to score just 78 per subject.

That’s much smaller number to work with.

And you can also redistribute the scores based on your strength in each subject.

JAMB SUBJECTTARGET SCORE
English76
Mathematics69
Chemistry80
Agriculture / Biology87
TOTAL312

Break your target score and share it among your JAMB subjects based on your strength in each one.

4. The earlier. The easier.

With your target set, next thing is to start studying as early as possible.

Last-minute preparation for JAMB is the most common reasons many candidates underperform.

You can cover the syllabus at a relaxed pace when you start early, with enough time to revisit difficult topics and practise more past questions before exam day.

But waiting until the final weeks puts your brain under too much pressure to retain anything.

Devote 1-2 hours of focused study per day starting now. The earlier you begin, the less tense and more thorough your preparation will be.

  • GET YOUR JAMB STUDY TIMETABLE

5. Study according to JAMB syllabus

Starting early only helps if you’re studying the right material.

Many candidates go wrong here by trying to read everything they covered in SS1, 2 and 3, over hundreds of topics and across four subjects too.

That’s an overwhelming and unnecessary approach.

JAMB does NOT draw its questions from EVERYTHING you learnt in secondary school but only from a specific list of topics in its syllabus.

Every question in your UTME will come from that list.

So, if you study only the syllabus topics, you’ve covered ALL that will appear in your exam and that’s enough.

Don’t read wide – read smart! Cover only the topics listed in the JAMB syllabus for each of your subjects.

  • SEE JAMB SYLLABUS FOR ALL YOUR SUBJECTS

6. Get JAMB recommended textbooks

Now that you know what to study, next is to get the right books to study with.

JAMB has a list of recommended textbooks for each subject.

These books are listed because they’ve been confirmed to contain clear, accurate explanations of every topic in the JAMB syllabus.

And you don’t need to buy every textbook on the list. A comprehensive one per subject is enough.

You can purchase it from a nearby bookstore, buy it online, or borrow it from your school library or a classmate.

If you already have a different textbook that covers the same syllabus topics well, use it.

Study with the JAMB recommended textbooks. A different textbook is also fine as long as it explains the syllabus topics well.

  • SEE THE LIST OF JAMB RECOMMENDED TEXTBOOKS

7. Study at your best time

Studying at a time when your brain is alert and focused means you understand far better than when you’re tired or forcing yourself to stay awake.

Some students retain information best early in the morning before the day gets busy.

Others do their best thinking late at night when it’s quiet.

There’s no overall best time.

What matters is that you identify YOUR OWN best study time and protect it throughout your preparation period.

Study at your personal best time because even difficult topics feel tolerable when your brain is genuinely alert and receptive.

8. Study your favourite subject more

Once your study time is sorted, think about how to divide your time across subjects.

Many make the mistake of spending most time on their weakest subjects in an attempt to improve but why struggle when you can get BETTER on something you are already GOOD at.

It is far easier to boost your score in a subject you already understand than to improve in one you’ve always struggled with.

That’s why we recommend allocating more of your study time to the subjects where you are already strong.

Push those scores as high as possible, then spend whatever time left on making modest improvements in your weaker areas.

Don’t ignore your weak subjects entirely but channel more energy on the subjects you are already strong in, because that’s where your highest score gains will come from.

9. Take ‘Use of English’ seriously

Regardless of your course or subject combination, English is compulsory for every JAMB candidate.

It contributes 60 questions to your total score, which has a significant impact on your final result whether you like it or not.

Good news is: English is the most predictable subject in JAMB with consistent pattern from year to year.

  • Comprehension passages
  • Recommended novel
  • Lexis and structure
  • Oral forms

Consistent practice with past questions and syllabus will push your English score well above 70 without extreme effort.

So, don’t treat English as optional. It can be your highest-scoring subject and boost your overall result.

  • SEE HOW TO SCORE HIGH IN JAMB USE OF ENGLISH

10. Practice more past questions

JAMB past questions are legit ‘expo’.

While questions are not repeated word-for-word, JAMB draws from same topics, same question structures and same concepts every year.

Past questions show you how JAMB tests each topic and what to focus on in your final weeks of preparation.

Candidates who study past questions can spot familiar patterns during exam and answer them fast.

Use past questions alongside the syllabus, not as a replacement for proper study.

And don’t just practise the most recent years alone.

Pick 5 years at random from every 10 years to get a broad picture of repeated topics and how JAMB frames its questions.

11. Practice JAMB CBT

Knowing the answers is half the battle in JAMB.

The other half is finishing 180 questions across four subjects in just 2 hours.

Many candidates come prepared but still lose marks because of time.

And that’s the problem that CBT practice solves.

What is JAMB CBT?

CBT stands for ‘Computer Based Test’.

All your JAMB questions will be displayed on a computer screen and are to be answered using the same computer.

The timer counts down by itself with no pause or extension.

And once the time is up, your exam ends no matter how many questions you’ve answered or not.

How to practice JAMB CBT

If you have a smartphone, download the JAMB Prep app.

It’s a free offline app that simulates the CBT exam format.

If you don’t have a smartphone, practice your CBT using a printed past question booklet and a timer.

Give yourself 30 minutes per subject, start the timer and answer questions under that time limit.

The goal of CBT practice is to master time management. So, do it regularly until you can finish each subject before your given time runs out.

Keep repeating timed practice sessions until finishing within the time limit becomes natural rather than stressful.

12. Go for CBT training

Practising JAMB CBT on your phone is good, but not the same as using an actual computer with a mouse and keyboard.

Your JAMB exam will be on desktop or laptop, not a phone or tablet.

So, if you’re not comfortable using a computer mouse and navigating between screens, you need to address that before exam day.

But you don’t need to learn Microsoft Word, Excel or any software package.

Just the basics on how to use a mouse, how to click and navigate between screens and how to interact with the JAMB CBT interface.

Cafe or ICT training centres can get you trained on this at little to no cost.

Most CBT apps also have downloadable software that you can practice JAMB questions on your personal computer.

If you’re already comfortable using a computer, you are good. If not, get basic CBT training before your exam so it doesn’t slow you down on exam day.

13. Consider JAMB Lesson

Self-study is the most effective approach but there will be topics in your syllabus that you can’t just understand on your own, no matter how many times you read them.

When that happens, seek help early.

JAMB lesson centres give you access to teachers who know the syllabus well and can explain difficult topics in ways your textbook can’t.

You can also get explanations online or from a guru friend.

How much is JAMB lesson?

The cost of JAMB lesson varies depending on the school or tutorial centre and their location.

Secondary schools often charge less per day while tutorial centres may charge more, especially for compulsory subjects.

Consider JAMB lesson if there are important topics in your subjects that you’ve not been able to understand by yourself.

  • JOIN FREE JAMB LESSON ON WHATSAPP

14. Join JAMB study groups

Studying with a group of candidates preparing for the same exam has real benefits.

When you discuss a topic with others, your brain retains it more than when you read it alone. Topics explained or debated in a group stick longer in your memory.

Study groups also expose you to topic areas you might have missed in your individual preparation.

A classmate who is strong in Chemistry can help you understand a difficult concept in minutes which would have taken you hours on your own.

Many JAMB study groups exist on social media platforms.

Join a relevant JAMB study group, whether physical or online. The collective knowledge of a group can add to your preparation.

  • JOIN JAMB STUDY GROUP ON FACEBOOK

15. Go for JAMB mock exam

JAMB conducts a mock exam a week or two before the main UTME.

This is not compulsory but one of the most valuable preparation opportunities.

The mock exam is in full CBT format just as the real exam, which means a genuine rehearsal before the D-day.

The mock questions are from previous JAMB past questions, so participating exposes you to real exam patterns under timed conditions.

It also shows you how well your time management is working and where you need to improve.

Even if you can’t attend the mock, do not worry. There are no consequences for absence. Just show up prepared for the main exam.

Go for the JAMB mock exam if you can. It is the closest experience to the real exam and a chance to identify gaps in your preparation early.

16. Visit your centre beforehand

Your JAMB exam slip will show the centre assigned to you for your exam.

Visit that centre in-person before exam day, so you’re not navigating unfamiliar roads under time pressure on the day of your exam.

During your pre-visit, note which bus or transport route to take, how long the journey takes from your home and what the centre looks like when you arrive.

If the centre is far from where you live, consider finding accommodation closer to it for just the night before your exam so you can arrive fresh and on time.

Knowing exactly where you are going and how long it takes removes a major anxiety on the morning of your exam.

General success tips for passing JAMB 2027 exam

With all your preparation in place, here’s how to perform at your best on the actual day of your JAMB exam.

1. Don’t forget your exam materials

The most important item to bring is the original printed copy of your JAMB exam slip.

Officials at the centre will check it before admitting you and without it, you may not be allowed to write the exam.

Also bring a valid means of identification.

Don’t carry any calculator, sheet of paper or electronic devices into the exam hall.

An on-screen calculator is provided on your computer for any calculations you need.

2. Reach your exam centre on time

Arriving early reduces exam-day tension and gives you time to settle in before your session begins.

Those who arrive late are sometimes dismissed, so plan to be at least 30-45 minutes early.

It is better to wait at the centre than to rush there in a panic.

3. Focus 100 percent

The moment you click Start Exam, your timer begins. Give your full attention to your own screen and your own questions.

Don’t look at what another candidate is doing and don’t let conversations or distractions around you pull your focus away.

Every second in that exam hall belongs to your performance, nothing else.

4. Start with your favourite subject

Begin your exam with the subject you are most confident in.

Because you know it well, you can move through those questions fast, which builds momentum.

Finishing your strongest subject early also frees up more time for the subjects that require more thought and gives you a positive mindset for the rest of the exam.

5. Do subjects with calculations last

Unless Maths, Physics or Accounting is your favourite subject, save the calculation subjects for last.

Starting with calculations can slow you down and consume time you need for the other papers.

It is better to complete the subjects you’re good at first, then spend your remaining time on calculations, than to spend too long on figures with no time left for your best subjects.

6. Skip questions you don’t know

If you read a question and can’t tell the answer, don’t spend more than ten seconds on it.

Skip it and move on…

You can always return to those skipped questions before you submit.

Spending minutes on one difficult question while many easier questions you know are waiting is a poor use of your limited time.

7. Crosscheck your answers

Before you submit, the CBT system will display how many questions you’ve answered and how many are unanswered.

Use whatever time you have left to go back through your unanswered questions and attempt every one of them.

Even a quick attempt at a question you are not sure about is better than leaving it blank.

8. Guessing is better than blank

If there are questions you still cannot answer even after returning to them, select any option rather than leaving them blank.

A guess gives you 1/4 chance of being correct.

A blank answer gives you ZERO chance.

There’s no penalty for wrong answers in JAMB, so always pick something.

9. Submit ONLY when you’re done

Once you click the Submit button, your exam ends immediately and permanently.

There’s no going back, no second attempt and no way to add or change answers.

So, before you click submit, make sure you have gone through every question and answered all.

Only submit when you’ve truly finished.

What to do after your JAMB exam

Once you finish your JAMB exam, the next step is to wait for your result.

Results are often released within one to two weeks after your examination date.

You can see how to CHECK YOUR JAMB RESULT via portal or SMS once it is available.

But while you wait, beware of fraudsters who claim to sell ‘expo’ before the exam or offer to upgrade your result after it is released.

Pre-exam expo is impossible because JAMB questions are unique to each candidate.

Your number 10 question can be my number 38 and your option C, my A.

Result upgrading is a scam too.

Anyone making those offers is just trying to scam you off your money. Stay away from them and trust your preparation and prayers.

Once results are out, read our guide on WHAT TO DO AFTER WRITING JAMB to understand the admission process, CAPS, Post UTME, and what your score means for admission.

Frequently asked questions about how to Pass JAMB 2027

Nigerian admission questions and answers
1. Is JAMB hard to pass without lessons or expo?

No. JAMB draws questions only from the official syllabus, so studying the syllabus using recommended textbooks and practising past questions can get you a high score without cheating or paying expensive tutorial centre.

2. What is a good score to aim for in JAMB 2027?

Aim higher than 200.

Since universities like UNILAG divide your JAMB score before combining it with Post UTME, targeting 280 or above gives you a real safety margin even if you fall short.

3. How many questions does JAMB have and how much time do I get?

You answer 160 questions across four subjects in 2 hours.

This is why CBT timing practice matters as much as knowing the content, since running out of time costs marks even when you know the answers.

4. Should I start with the hardest or easiest subject in the exam?

Start with your favourite or strongest subject to build momentum and confidence.

Save calculation subjects like Maths or Physics for last unless they happen to be your best subject.

5. What should I do if I don’t know the answer to a question?

Skip it after 10 seconds and come back later.

If you still can’t answer it before submitting, guess rather than leave it blank.

There’s no penalty for wrong answers in JAMB.

Conclusion

You do NOT need to cheat, exhaust yourself or even spend a fortune on lesson centres to pass JAMB 2027.

What you need is a smart approach, the right materials and consistent effort applied in the right direction.

Choose a course that plays to your strengths, study the syllabus, practise past questions, and master time through CBT practice.

Do these and you’re already ahead of the majority of candidates sitting the same exam.

GOOD LUCK.
