Chapter 01: Dusk…
At the morning assembly, Principal Bepo Adewale suddenly cannot talk.
He walks to the podium looking sad and starts to cry in front of everyone.
The Vice Principal (Mrs. Grace Apeh) and other staff try to find out what is wrong, but Bepo does not say anything.
He is taken to his office, still weeping.
News of his strange behaviour reaches some parents and the Managing Director (MD), Mrs. Ibidun Gloss, is called to the school.
She questions Bepo, but he only keeps saying, “I will be all right.”
Even a pastor-teacher (Mr. Ope Wande) is invited to talk to him too, but Bepo still will not explain his problem.
The MD later learns that Bepo’s wife now lives in London.
In the end, Bepo is asked to go home to rest.

Chapter 02: The Enticement
We learn why Bepo was crying: he has decided to relocate (japa) to the United Kingdom.
His wife (Seri) and their two children (Nike and Kike) are already in the UK, and Seri has been pressuring him to join them.
But Bepo loves his job and his students at Stardom Schools, where he has worked for over 20 years and earned the nickname “The Lekki Headmaster”.
His colleagues think he is foolish to be sad about such a “golden opportunity”.
People compare his Nigerian salary to what he could earn in pounds in the UK.
But Bepo had wanted to start his own transport or private school business when he retired.
Chapter 03: Migration Tales
Bepo starts researching what life is like for Nigerians who have moved abroad.
He learns about hourly wages in the UK, USA and Canada, and how much people can earn compared to Nigeria.
He hears stories of Nigerians selling everything to relocate.
Some borrowing money and never paying back.
And even people who stole to fund their travel.
His former colleague (Sola) who now lives in the UK, tells him about her experience — the good side like free healthcare and schools, and the opposite like low-paying jobs and expensive rent.
Not every migration story is a success; some people abroad struggle badly.
Chapter 04: A Case of Visa Denied
A parent (Mrs. Ignatius) calls Bepo late at night to complain that her husband (Ibe) has not come home.
Their family had planned to relocate to London, but their visa was denied because a DNA test showed that Mr. Ignatius is not the biological father of one of their three children.
This discovery has caused serious trouble in the marriage, and Ibe threatens to leave his wife and the child who is not his.
This chapter shows another side of the japa dream — how family secrets can be exposed by the visa process and how emigration is not always simple or happy.
Chapter 05: Snake in the Roof
During lunch break, the MD (Mrs. Ibidun Gloss), goes to inspect a piece of land that the school owns.
She is shocked to find many staff cars and big vehicles parked there secretly.
She fears that teachers are stealing school money to buy these cars.
She calls the accountant and principal to explain.
It turns out the money came from the school’s staff cooperative society, which had grown very large — ₦95 million in the account, with ₦50 million loaned out.
Worried that the cooperative has become too powerful (like “a snake in the roof”), the board of directors decides to limit how much any staff member can borrow, to protect the school from future risk.
Chapter 06: Ade as well as Jide — COMES vs. COME
On the school’s Open Day, a parent (Mr. Guta), is angry after reading a note by the English teacher (Mr. Fafore) that says “Ade as well as Jide comes early.”
The MD believes this is bad grammar and orders that Fafore be sacked immediately, without checking the fact first.
Principal Bepo defends Fafore, explaining that the sentence is actually correct English grammar.
Everyone checks online and finds that Bepo and Fafore are right, and the MD was wrong.
The comic teacher (Mr. Audu) jokes about the matter and helps ease the embarrassment.
Fafore is not sacked after all.
Chapter 07: Ritualists
This chapter looks back at Bepo’s past.
He had worked at Beesway Group of Schools where he had a disagreement with the school director over a grammar mistake in the school’s name.
But the real reason he left Beesway was far more frightening – Bepo saw the director and some men trying to bury a cow alive on the school grounds late one night.
When Bepo tried to stop them, he was attacked and injured.
He also remembers an earlier experience when he and a friend ran a small school called Fruitful Future, where a parent offered to perform “magic” (using grains of corn) to attract more students — an offer Bepo refused.
He later hears that that same man was arrested for murdering a woman using a similar ritual trick.
Chapter 08: Missions Unaccomplished
As Bepo prepares to leave Nigeria, he thinks about problems he has not yet solve at Stardom Schools.
One big issue is a prolonged quarrel between two families of Banky and Tosh.
It started from a dance competition and grew into political and legal conflict.
During a school prefect election speech, Banky insults Tosh by calling his father “an ex-convict,” causing outrage.
Bepo tried to make peace between the families, but the matter is still unresolved as he leaves.
He is also sad about leaving the school’s Invention Club, which was building a phone from recycled parts.
But he vows to return for its launch if it succeeds.
Chapter 09: Laughing Waterfalls
This chapter describes Stardom Schools’ tradition of taking students on excursions around Nigeria.
On their trip to Badagry (a town famous for its role in the transatlantic slave trade) students learn about the history of slavery, including the “Point of No Return”, where captured Africans were put on ships and taken away forever.
Watching this history reminds Bepo of the modern “japa” trend.
And he sadly compares it to a “new form of slavery” — Nigerians rushing to leave their country for hard lives abroad, just as slaves were once forced away long ago.
Chapter 10: Passport Pains
Bepo faces frustrating problems trying to renew his expired Nigerian passport.
Because of large crowds and long delays at the Lagos passport office, he decides to travel to Ibadan for a faster process.
On the journey, Bepo reflects on the changes he sees along the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway — new roads, businesses and religious buildings.
He ends up paying extra money to an agent (Tai) to speed things up, which shows how common bribery and “connection” are in government processes.
Even after paying the agent, Bepo still faces more delays at the National Identity Number (NIN) office, which puts his travel date at risk.
Chapter 11: Point of No Return
The school organizes a big farewell party for Bepo.
There are games, a debate, comedy skits mimicking Bepo’s habits and traditional Nigerian dances, including a Canoe dance from Badagry.
During the dance, Bepo becomes so emotional (remembering the slave history again) that he shouts out loud, disturbing the performance — but he quickly calms the crowd with a joke.
The MD gives a moving speech praising Bepo’s 24 years of service and presents him with a cheque of $10,000 as a farewell gift.
Bepo is overcome with emotion and cries as he tries to give his thank-you speech.
Chapter 12: …Dawn
Bepo prepares to travel to the UK, remembering an earlier time he missed a flight by misreading his ticket.
This time, he is very careful.
His landlord’s family comes to say goodbye, and his colleagues (the VP, accountant and other teachers) follow him to the airport.
At the airport, Bepo checks in and later falls asleep while waiting to board.
He has a frightening dream about the slave museum in Badagry, where he sees himself being forced onto a slave ship, and he wakes up screaming “Nooo!” just before the flight takes off.
On the following Monday, students at Stardom Schools are sad that Bepo is gone — until, suddenly, he appears at the school gate!
Bepo has decided not to leave Nigeria after all.
He tells everyone, “My heart is here!” and the students celebrate his return with joy.
