NMCN indexing confirms you’re in an ACCREDITED NURSING SCHOOL and eligible to continue your training to become a Registered Nurse (RN) in Nigeria.

See more on what NMCN index number means, when nursing students are indexed, documents required for NMCN indexing, how to check and what happens if you’re not indexed.

Meaning of NMCN indexing

The Nursing and Midwifery Council of Nigeria (NMCN) is the body responsible for regulating nursing education and practice in Nigeria.

And NMCN indexing officially registers you with the Nursing Council as a student nurse undergoing professional training in an accredited school of nursing.

During this process, the Council receives your details from the school and records them in its official database.

This also confirms three things:

  1. That you were properly admitted into the school.
  2. That the school is accredited by the Nursing Council.
  3. That you qualified to continue the nursing training.

Indexing is like opening a professional file with the Nursing Council.

And once this file is created, the Council gives you an NMCN index number.

This number is used to identify you during exams, track your academic progress and register you for the FINAL NURSING EXAM.

What NMCN index number looks like

Your NMCN index number will look like this:

NMCN/SON/2024/XXXX

This number include the Council identifier, your school code, the year of indexing and your unique student number.

Remember to keep it safe as it will be used throughout your training.

When are nursing students indexed?

Most nursing students in Nigeria are indexed during their first year.

But the exact timing differs.

In many ACCREDITED NURSING SCHOOLS, indexing happens several months to a year after admission or before clinical postings start.

During this period, you pay the NMCN INDEXING FEE and the school submits your information to the Nursing Council.

Required documents for NMCN indexing

Some of the documents you must submit to confirm your identity, eligibility and admission status for complete indexing are as follows.

  1. Admission letter
  2. O’Level result (WAEC, NECO, NABTEB, etc)
  3. Birth certificate
  4. Passport photographs
  5. Biodata form

Once you submit these documents, your school forwards them to the Council for processing.

Worried about your indexing status or not sure where and how to check NMCN index number?

See how to check NMCN index number

Well, there’s no public website or link for checking your index number.

Instead NMCN communicates it through your nursing school.

Check your NMCN index number with your school admin or ask your course rep/tutor for the clinical logbooks and records.

Common NMCN indexing problems

Should you experience delays or issues getting your NMCN index number.

It could be due to one or more of these reasons.

Delay in submission

Sometimes, schools delay sending students’ records to the Council and this can slow down the indexing process.

Incomplete documents

If your documents are incomplete, the Council will not approve your indexing.

Documents like O’level result, passport photographs, admission verification are often an issue once missing.

Errors in information

Mistakes in your name, date of birth or other records can delay indexing approval.

School accreditation

If your school has problems with its accreditation, your indexing will be delayed until the issue is resolved.

Always confirm your indexing status early to find and rectify any of these challenges on time, should they come up.

What happens if you’re not indexed?

If a nursing student is not indexed, several serious problems may occur.

  1. They can’t take the Nursing Council exam.
  2. Their nursing training won’t be recognized.
  3. They can’t become a Registered Nurse (RN).
