TRCN exam is easy to pass for bonafide teachers like YOU.
Whether you graduated recently or a long time ago, just follow the TRCN exam tips below for sure success.
1. Register early
When you register early for TRCN exam, your preparation also starts early with enough time to reduce that “exam tension” that we all feel.
“Early” here means at least a month before the exam date.
The earlier you register for TRCN and start studying, the more time you have to revise those education topics that you may have forgotten.
And the more you refresh your memory on those topics, the more your confidence which reduces the exam tension and improves your overall success rate in the exam.
2. Study TRCN syllabus for your category
There are (4) categories of teachers.
- Category (A) – teachers with PhD.
- Category (B) – teachers with Masters.
- Category (C) – teachers with Bachelor degree.
- Category (D) – teachers with NCE.
Each of these categories has its own TRCN exam syllabus.
The topics in each syllabus are the same, but the depth and complexity of areas of concentration in each topic increases with the category.
Only category (D) teachers are to stick to their syllabus — higher category teachers are to study the TRCN syllabus both for their category and the categories below theirs.
For example.
- Category (C) must study category (C) and (D) syllabuses.
- Category (B) must study category (B), (C) and (D) syllabuses.
- Category (A) must study category (A), (B), (C) and (D) syllabuses.
As a higher category teacher (let’s say, Master degree holder), it is believed that you must have scaled through the depth of topics at the NCE and first degree level.
If you’re in the higher categories, do not panic!
Just read each topic deeper and wider — it is the same topics for all categories after all.
3. Focus on the Areas of Concentration (AoC)
There are (23) topics in the syllabus but only (6) of these topics are emphasized (i.e.) more TRCN questions come from these six topics, no matter your category or exam year.
These (6) topics:
- English
- Mathematics
- ICT or Educational Technology
- Use of the Library
- Educational Statistics
- Research Methods
So while you study your syllabus(es), focus more on these (6) topics.
Give each of them extra study time because more of your TRCN exam questions comes from them than other topics.
4. Study TRCN past questions
There is a misconception about past questions that must be addressed first.
Some candidates “cram” past questions hoping to see the exact same questions (word-for-word) in their own exam.
Of course, past questions are repeated but with different words and from different areas of the same topic.
For example.
A question under Philosophy of Education asked:
“Who is the father of Pragmatism?”
Similar question asked again in another year:
“The Pragmatic school of thought originated from which country?”
Right there is a repeated past questions!!
How? They are from the same area (Pragmatism) in the same topic (Philosophy of Education).
Only the structure was changed.
Past questions give you deeper insight on each area in the topic of your syllabus.
Study past questions for these insights because knowing that John Dewey — an American philosopher — is the “father of pragmatism” tells you that pragmatic school of thought originated from U.S.A.
5. Practice CBT
TRCN exam is CBT — “Computer Based Test” meaning that all your TRCN exam questions will be asked and answered using a computer.
No theory! No OMR sheet!!
The questions have been programmed into the computers in your exam centre.
All you have to do is click on the correct answer to each question and submit when you are done.
Can you do that?
If YES, move straight to the next tip.
Otherwise.

6. Leave no question unanswered
During your exam, there will be some questions that you were never expecting and that will throw you off-balance but do not panic.
Just skip them and move to the next.
After answering all the questions you know, go back to those you skipped and you may now remember the answer.
But if you still don’t know it, just pick any random answer.
You have ¼ percent chance of getting that question you randomly answered but 0% chance if you leave the question unanswered.
So which chance is better?
7. Submit only when you are done
Ensure you click on the “SUBMIT” or “FINISH EXAM” button at the end of your TRCN exam before leaving the hall.
But make sure you have answered all questions before clicking on that button because once you submit, you cannot go back to the questions.
Conclusion
You may be tempted to ask someone beside you for an answer to a question you don’t know.
Just remember that that person may be in a higher or lower category than you.
Even if they are in your category, their question (1) might be your question (29).
So be smarter.
You can pass all on your own with adequate preparation.
GOOD LUCK.
